The budding sports stars of Figtree Public School are celebrating this week after the school was awarded a $5000 grant from Bakers Delight as part of its Australia-wide Top Sports School Grants program.
Figtree principal Paul Brightwell said the school community was excited about the recognition for the schools' sports program."We're over the moon, particularly with the $5000 because that will provide a lot of sports resources for the school that it dearly needs," Mr Brightwell said."It just provides so many more opportunities with so much extra money." Mr Brightwell only joined Figtree this year, and admitted he had quite a few priorities that were far more urgent than looking for new ways to gain extra funding.Consequently he is very grateful that some parents at the school, Bruce and Sharolyn McKeown, heard about the program and put in a nomination for Figtree Public at Bakers Delight Figtree."One of the things I've noticed since I started here is that we have such very supportive parents and a wonderful P&C," he said. "Sports are very much a part of the school culture and every one gets involved. Our cross-country carnival was only last week - every student from kindergarten to Year Six competed and the parents support running the carnival was amazing."Bakers Delight Figtree franchisee Mick Fuller was at the school this week to hand over the cheque. "Bakers Delight Figtree is very much a part of the local community. Thousands of schools across the country were nominated for a Top Sports School Grant, we are so proud to have a local winner," he said.Brightwell believes the school's excellent sporting program was one of the reasons the school won the grant."The school has a very strong sporting history," he said."A couple of weeks ago at Berkeley we entered the futsal indoor soccer competition. In 2007 Figtree took out first place in the state in that competition in the boys. "With the competition we entered a couple of weeks ago we entered a boys team and a girls team and both teams are now through to the state championships in June."It's just amazing the depth of talent and the variety of sporting talent in the school."
