HUNTER TAFE baking apprentices have scooped the pool at this year's Newcastle Bread Competition awards.

Bakers from around the state descended on Hamilton campus yesterday to participate in the largest bread and pastry competition in NSW.

Organised by the NSW Baking Industry Association, the competition had 40 categories, ranging from white and novelty breads to pies, wedding cakes and scones.

After a long day of sniffing and tasting, judges declared Hunter TAFE apprentice Andrew Davidson the championship loaf winner.

Fellow apprentice Josh Mantellio took out three first-place and two second-place awards as well as best all-rounder.

Baking trades teacher Dean Tilden won best sourdough.
