AROUND 40 bakers and apprentices competed in the 2004 Bakers Delight Ron Gillespie Awards last Thursday at the Hamilton TAFE campus.

It was the first time the competition had been held in the Hunter Region, and only the second year in which apprentices had been able to compete.

Aimed at improving product quality, competitors were required to prepare an assortment of wholemeal breads, scrolls and sweet breads.

The winner of the 20- to 25-years category, to be announced in November, will receive an expenses-paid trip to Melbourne for a five-day skills conference.
